Arna Bontemps (1902-1973) is best remembered as a Harlem Renaissance poet and novelist. He also had a long career in higher education as a professor and librarian. From 1943 to 1965, he was the head librarian at Fisk University in Nashville, TN, developing crucial collections and archives of African American luminaries, such as Charles Waddell Chesnutt, Langston Hughes, and W. E. B. du Bois.
