“Practicing Hospitality in a Time of Backlash”

1998
Defining “hospitality” as being welcoming to others as God has welcomed us and “backlash” to indicate attempts by those in power to reclaim the few victories women have gained in society and return those considered marginal back to subordinate roles, Letty Russell used feminist theology to examine the idea of inclusive church reaching out to the poor and disposed. Noting that the idea of election, in which God chooses certain favored groups, has been used a divine sanction of conformity rather than unity, Russell moved election from its elitist leaning to one which celebrates diversity.
