During their time at Vanderbilt, the Cherokee and Chickasaw students contributed to campus culture through all manner of extracurricular activities, including literary and debating societies, student government, and Greek life. Pictured here is an excerpt from the Nashville Daily American, congratulating William Wirt Hastings on his unanimous election as anniversarian of the Philosophic Literary Society. Hastings served for a year as class poet, joined Delta Tau Delta fraternity, and honed his skills as an orator and advocate in numerous moot courts.
