Elsie Bastable, the otherwise anonymous keeper of this recipe book, lived in England toward the end of the 19th century. She included many common recipes written in longhand as well as clippings from newspapers, as was also common. Like other receipt books of the period, she included medical remedies alongside culinary recipes.
