The recipes in this book celebrate African American history by connecting identity with food traditions, cultural pride, art, and significant historical events, figures, institutions, and celebrations. People celebrated in the cookbook include Crispus Attucks, Dred Scott, WC Handy, Harriet Tubman, Adam Clayton Powell, and Phyllis Wheatley. Many of the recipes were submitted by local councils of the organization.
