Film Music
Includes an essay by Stan Link titled “Horror and Science Fiction.” The abstract reads: “Explores the similarities and differences between music of science fiction films and horror films. Some musical similarities include tremolos, melodic distortions, dissonant harmonies and other stylistic features associated with contemporary music. Musical differences stem from the distinction between the two genres: science fiction rests on the affective state of displacement, while horror films rest on emotional shock, alienation, fear, and menacing. Both genres have made use of popular music, and they both blur the distinction between music, sound, and noise.”
