James Weldon Johnson was a prominent African American writer, educator, diplomat, and civil rights activist.  He served as U.S. consul in Venezuela and Nicaragua in 1906 to 1913 and as executive secretary of the N.A.A.C.P. from 1920 to 1930. His 1933 autobiography, Along This Way, offers valuable insights into the struggles and achievements of African Americans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  His work highlights the rich cultural heritage of African Americans and their contributions to American history and culture.  His autobiography reflects on his personal growth and the moral and ethical challenges he faced as well as his efforts to fight racial injustice and promote justice and equality.
