Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave was the first of three autobiographies written by Frederick Douglass.  These works give a personal account of his life as an enslaved person and its impact on individuals and society.  Douglass’s narrative was instrumental to the abolitionist movement and the struggle for freedom and equality.  His works are celebrated for their literary quality and have earned them a place among the great works of American literature.
