Reverend Pauli Murray was a trailblazing civil rights activist, lawyer, feminist, poet, and Episcopal priest. As an attorney, she contributed significantly to the struggle for both civil rights and the rights of women. She was the first Black woman to be ordained as an Episcopal priest. While an activist in the civil rights movement, she coined the term Jane Crow to demonstrate her belief that Jim Crow laws also negatively affected women. In 2024, the U.S. Mint honored her service as one of the most important social justice advocates of the 20th century by selecting Rev. Dr. Murray for the American Women Quarters Program.
