Over a century represented through literary works from creative explorations\u2014Paul Laurence Dunbar\u2019s <I>Poems of Cabin and Field<\/I> and Richard Wright\u2019s <I>The Outsider<\/i>\u2014to nonfiction and autobiographical accounts: James Weldon Johnson\u2019s <I>Black Manhattan<\/I> and Frederick Douglass\u2019s <I>Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass<\/I>. These authors wielded the written word in pursuit of social change and justice. The earliest writers in the collection\u2014Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Douglass, and Ida B. Wells\u2014advocate for freedom and against lynching.
