Eminent astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard started working at Vanderbilt University in 1883 when he accepted a fellowship to manage the observatory. While at Vanderbilt, he kept this journal for notes on his readings and classes he was taking, many of them focused on calculating positions of stellar objects based on ground observation.
