Modern Bookbinding Practically Considered

New York: Grolier Club
1889
Nettie Hale Rand Collection of Fine Bindings and Printing, Vanderbilt University Special Collections

The Grolier Club is the oldest bibliophilic club in North America, named after Jean Grolier de Servieres, Viscount d’Aguisy, Treasurer General of France. He was well known for his library and often shared books with friends. In addition to collecting books, the Club also publishes occasional books that demonstrate, promote, and encourage the art of book production. This volume, Modern Bookbinding Practically Considered includes details of decorative metal type that would have been used in various motifs to garnish book covers in the hand-press period. It has a beautiful cover itself, bordered by fine gilt flourishes.
