Thomas Jefferson Randolph was the grandson of Thomas Jefferson and the first person to collect and publish his grandfather’s writings. This four-volume set was inscribed to Andrew Jackson by the author.

A small illustration is pasted into the first volume that purports to be in Thomas Jefferson’s handwriting, a note that Nicholas P. Trist found in a set of the Laws of Virginia while he was a clerk at the Department of State. It illustrates the positions of colonial regiments during the Battle of Camden in the Revolutionary War.

Of note is Nicholas P. Trist’s association with the two presidents who hailed from Tennessee. Trist served as a diplomat in the James K. Polk administration and, in 1847, as a negotiator for the treaty that ended the Mexican-American War. He also served as a private secretary to Andrew Jackson in 1831.
