Ada Bell Stapleton’s Hire Letter

Although there women had volunteered at Vanderbilt for years, Ada Bell Stapleton became the first official female staff member in 1925 at Vanderbilt when she accepted the position of Professor of Literature and Dean of Women. Chancellor James H. Kirkland offered her the position along with an annual salary of $3,000 and a three-year contract.
