Alpha Kappa Alpha

The founding of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s local chapter on campus in 1972 marked the establishment of Vanderbilt’s first predominantly black sorority.  “Unwritten social codes” limited minority inclusion in white sororities, so AKA provided a much-needed social outlet for black female students. Vanderbilt now hosts seven National Pan-Hellenic Council Greek organizations. Pictured here are some of the earliest members of AKA.
