Werthan graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Vanderbilt University in 1929. Her fellow students elected her Lady of the Bracelet, the highest recognition given a female undergraduate. She was also president of the Women’s Student Government, the Women’s Athletic Association, her sorority, Alpha Epsilon Phi, and a member of the Honor Council. She became the first woman named to the Board of Trust in 1964 and after age 70, was elected a lifetime member of the Vanderbilt Board of Trust.
