Elizabeth Langland, assistant professor of English at Vanderbilt, was nominated for tenure in the English department in 1981. Despite winning departmental support, Langland was denied tenure at the college level by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Langland attempted to overrule the Dean’s decision by suing Vanderbilt on the basis of sex-based discrimination. The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals ultimately ruled in Vanderbilt’s favor, echoing the lower court decision. Langland’s response to this issue was published in the Vanderbilt Register.
