In this short excerpt, the local newspaper discusses the public debate held by the Philosophic and Dialectic Societies holding a debate on if the study of science leads to infidelity. This is an interesting and progressive topic considering the very Methodist influence in the University. The Philosophic Literary Society also held an election and the newspaper highlighted the incumbent president, J.H. Dortch, describing him as a promising law student and orator. Students at the university were not only being encouraged to discuss their own thoughts on a university-sponsored stage, but also recognized for their great efforts and talents in speaking in “a clear, decisive and impressive manner.”
