Student Organizations at Vanderbilt: 1886-1895

During Vanderbilt’s second decade, student organizations emerged. Initially, literary societies were the only student organizations allowed on campus. However, by the 1890s, many non-academic student organizations had formed, with at least 21 clubs registered in 1893, along with several athletic teams. These clubs were primarily dinner clubs and social clubs, but there were several pre-professional organizations and state clubs. Additionally, the school paper, The Hustler, was established in 1888, and after the ban on fraternities was lifted in 1883, their membership grew quickly.
