In 1895, Mary Henderson Kirkland married James Hampton Kirkland. From a prominent family and well-educated, Mrs. Kirkland eliminated the stereotypes Chancellor Kirkland held towards Co-eds. As the University’s first lady, she helped organize the Vanderbilt Women’s Club and the Vanderbilt Aid Society. She also contributed to uniting all departments of the University in cooperative efforts.
