Portrait of Dr. James Hampton Kirkland, Chancellor of Vanderbilt University

1914
With a Ph.D. from Germany and hired as a Professor of Latin, Chancellor James Hampton Kirkland was considered a quintessential classical educational elitist. Described as ambitious and resourceful, Kirkland was responsible for leading Vanderbilt’s ascension to the national stage during his forty-four-year term (1893-1937).
