[Letter from Chancellor James Kirkland to Reverend J.W. Moore]

Chancellor James Hampton Kirkland
December 16, 1909
This copy of a letter written by Kirkland, found in his personal archives, is most likely to a friend and/or a former student. Here Kirkland claims the innocence of the Board of trusts in the controversy. Kirkland himself was a Methodist, he never desired a severance between The Church and Vanderbilt. However, Bishop Hoss and other Methodist clergymen launched a series of attacks on every action taken by Kirkland, impeding his ability to function as chancellor. Hoss’ intense criticism of Kirkland turned the conflict into an all-out war.
