[Bishop Elijah Embree Hoss, Sr., 1849-1919]
The Christian Advocate, Vol. 17
May 10, 1910
Bishop Hoss was a Tennessee native and a prominent figure within the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, as well as a member of the Vanderbilt Board of Trust. Hoss was one of the most outspoken board members against the University severing ties with the Church. Known for his scathing denouncements of “sinful behavior” in his Nashville community, Hoss was entrenched in not only the church but the politics of the universities of the South. By 1905, Hoss began demanding a religious revolution within Vanderbilt and a reassertion of church values on the students.
