The Hustler, Vol. XXI, No. 17
March 3, 1910
Oratorical contests - debates between prominent literary societies - were cause for excitement in the early 20th century. This article in the Vanderbilt Hustler reported on a recent Intersociety Oratorical Contest, held annually at Vanderbilt in the period. Fred Wilson of the Philosophic Literary Society won first place, but the article noted the high standard of excellence for all participants. The debate topics varied wildly, but fell under the umbrella of politics and philosophical thought.
