Whereas strip mining is used when the coal is less than 200 feet below the surface, underground mining is used when the coal is buried several hundred feet below the surface or more. In these types of mines, miners use heavy machinery to cut out the coal and rely on conveyor systems to transport the coal to the surface. This particular mine was located a mile under the earth and reached by a small electric rail car, about three miles from the elevator. The dangers of working in this mine were tremendous.
