It was a bitter conflict between the Eastover Mining Company and the United Mine Workers of America over the dangerous working conditions at Brookside. Corn and reporter Nat Caldwell traveled to Harlan to cover the escalating controversy. While shooting a photograph of a large hand-lettered sign put up by the strikers, a teenage boy and girl came walking up the road. While dressed nicely, they were not in the kind of clothes most teenagers would wear to the Junior-Senior prom. \u201d In the end, the UMWA won the strike in August of 1974.
