Case 4: Letter to the Editor

These letters remind us that the relationship between a writer and an editor is first and foremost a business relationship. The writers ask—or tell—the editors to do certain things, and though the messages are often cordial, they also maintain a sense of reserve. There are questions about money, references to other writers, warnings about the “gutter press,” and worry about coming across as annoying. In the end, mutual gratitude supersedes any awkwardness, as the editors referenced here all played an important role in getting these writers the recognition they deserved.
