[“Letters,” a handwritten poem]
In an 1835 letter to his future wife, Lydia Jackson, poet Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “I more willingly trust my pen than my tongue” (January 24, 1835). In this handwritten poem, the writing-focused poet compares letters to ships. As a result, the poem brings up intimations of progress, adventure, discovery, and even potential danger. Can you find the other nautical references in this exhibit?
