Bonus: [Letter from Ezra Pound to David McDowell]
In this letter, Ezra Pound thanks David McDowell for sending him a book he is “glad to have,” suggesting that he often receives books he does not like. Random House, where McDowell was an editor, published the book in question, China in the Sixteenth Century: The Journals of Matthew Ricci, in 1953. The “Father Gallagher” Pound mentions is Louis J. Gallagher, the book’s translator. Pound’s famous work, The Cantos, is an extremely eclectic text which includes Chinese characters in addition to English.
