[Note from Robert Louis Stevenson to Miss Harris]
Although Robert Louis Stevenson was a successful writer, his writing didn’t bring him financial security until The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde became a bestseller eight years before he died at age 44. This note to Miss Harris asks for ten shillings (about $10 in today’s money) due to Stevenson being “bankrupt”—at least “till [that] afternoon.”
