The Nashville American Cumberland Almanac

Nashville, Tenn: American Co.
1896?-
Southern Civilization Collection, AY306 .N3 N3, Vanderbilt University Special Collections

This almanac is a local one, dear to the hearts of Nashvillians. Printed in Nashville in 1896 – the 200th anniversary of the state of Tennessee – it features historical and statistical facts about the city, much like a Blue Book issued by the federal government. Information about state and local offices, such as the names of judges and election data on counties, is coupled with tips on removing flies from stables and spraying fruit to prevent fungal diseases. Details on improving agriculture and tidying one’s household are bookended by advertisements from the First National Bank, the Southern Turf (a shop with imported and domestic wines and cigars) and other local facilities and shops.
