This facsimile reproduction of the Liber Chronicarum of 1493  features the double page view of the city of Nuremberg, Germany where Ulman Stromer built his papermill in 1390. It was the first papermill north of the Alps, and is pictured in the lower right hand corner of the woodcut reproduction. The mill and others like it, were close to the water source, a river or stream or spring, and were outside the city walls due to the stench and noise the mills made.
