It defined the cyberpunk genre, fusing noir style with a high-tech dystopian future. For the novel, Gibson coined and popularized the term \u201ccyberspace,\u201d a virtual realm where data becomes a physical landscape. Independent artificial intelligences have their own agendas, including the pursuit of autonomy and the merging of human and machine. The novel won the Hugo, Nebula and Philip K.
