Holland Nimmons McTyeire was born in 1824 in South Carolina. A skilled administrator and writer, he became the editor of the Nashville-based Christian Advocate in 1858, and in 1866 he was elected as a bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He served one of his ministerial terms in Mobile, Alabama, during which time he met his future wife Amelia Townsend.
