The Equatorial Room

The Equatorial Room Telescope, 1876
c. 1876
Vanderbilt University Photographic Archives

Purchased from the T. Cooke and Sons in York, England, this impressive telescope was clock-automated to map a target in the night sky without the researcher’s assistance by the hour. The instrument lent its name to its home in the equatorial room at the Barnard Observatory. Recently refurbished, it stands on display at the Exploration House in the Dyer Observatory.
