Gift of Arthur Lyons. Albert Adamkiewicz (1850-1921) was a Polish pathologist best known for his discovery of arteries of the spinal cord and their importance in neurological surgery. He is also known for his claim of finding a cancer-causing parasite as well as having invented a cancer-curing serum. His researches in these areas were ultimately a failure, and he dedicated the rest of his career to clinical practice.

Up through the 19th century, the majority of brain atlases were based on dissections, but Adamkewicz published these full-color illustrations of the living brain for use in surgery.
