John Call Dalton (1825-1889) is considered the first American experimental neurophysiologist, and made several significant discoveries on the effects of intracranial pressure on pulse, respiration and consciousness. His atlas is the first American publication to utilize the photography of carefully prepared vertical and horizontal brain sections. The illustrations – which are characterized by their detail and clarity – are accompanied by outline drawings and descriptions prepared by the author. Given the complexity of the process, only 250 copies were produced, but its influence in the field of neuroanatomy and physiology lasted well into the 20th century.
