Caricaturist Adalbert Volck created several political cartoons criticizing Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War. A Confederate sympathizer, Volck censured the president for his perceived disregard for the constitution and individual state laws. In this cartoon, Lincoln is represented using his pen to achieve his goals, and his advisor, General Winfield Scott, is depicted in the costume of a jester.
