In &#8220;Calling,&#8221; the speaker&#8217;s mother is conflated with &#8220;the Black Virgin,&#8221; &#8220;a dark Madonna.&#8221; This artist&#8217;s book, &#8220;Levitation,&#8221; honors St. Martin de Porres, who was born in Peru to a white father and a black mother who was a freed slave.
