The Hall children – Judy, Betty, and Bobby – pose with their horse in front of their family’s barn. After their father, Junior Hall, was shot by a neighbor over a dispute about ownership of a hog, Bobby had carried his father on horseback to get help. The incident attests to the ongoing thread of violence that lay just beneath the surface in the mountains of Appalachia. At the time of this photograph, Junior Hall was still in the hospital recovering from brain surgery.
