Most schools in the mining communities of Appalachia were small, dimly lit, and lacked adequate funding and supplies. Nonetheless, the innocence, enthusiasm, and resourcefulness of the children combined with the tremendous dedication of a few wonderful teachers made the school experience for children in Appalachia a more positive than negative one.
