The Berlin Wall was constructed by the German Democratic Republic in 1961, dividing West and East Berlin and preventing emigration. On June 26, 1963 President Kennedy made a speech in West Berlin where he stated “Ich bin ein Berliner”, literally, “I am a citizen of Berlin.” This undated cartoon depicts the dove of peace caught on the barbed wire atop the wall.
