“School yard pump”

The children at Buffalo School drank from the well pictured in this photograph with a hand pump. Over the preceding year, the pump had been linked to myriad cases of hepatitis, which prompted a visit from the Department of Health. Cousins Anita Overton, Kyle Overton, and Pauline Overton gather around the well in this photograph, thirsty after their recess. Despite the association of the well with hepatitis, it remained the only source of water for the children at Buffalo School.
