The Revered Henry Snoderly, a retired coal miner, preaches at the Wednesday night service at Rose’s Creek Baptist Church in Clairfield, Tennessee. The bare block walls of the room are decorated with drawings; exposed light bulbs, a pot-bellied stove and simple pews reflect the hard scrabble nature of life. Corn writes, “He preached as if he had a hundred people in the church. The small church would only hold about 50 people if it were packed, but that did not deter him. He was a fine man, driving over the mountain from his home in Lafollette to preach several times a week. He received no salary and he paid the light bill.”
