Modern Paper Artists
Over the past century, making paper by hand, often for artists’ books, has attracted a great following. Book artists and papermakers have studied the techniques and composition of paper from the past and use traditional and non-traditional methods and materials for their unique papers.
Modern paper and book artists whose work is in the Vanderbilt libraries include Claire Van Vliet, founder of the Janus Press; Peter and Donna Thomas, itinerant book artists from California who have travelled the world studying and making paper and books; and Beverly Plummer, a Nashvillian who has worked to bridge the gap between book arts and other forms of art-making.
