William Morris and Dard Hunter

William Morris and Dard Hunter are venerated icons in the world of books, printing, and papermaking. William Morris founded the Kelmscott Press in 1891 in response to the poor quality of the mass- produced books of the 19th century. For his press he insisted on linen paper modelled on a Bolognese paper of 1473, and found Joseph Batchelor of Little Chart Kent to make the paper to his exact specifications. Dard Hunter devoted his life to learning all that he could about the ancient craft of making paper by hand. To this end this he dedicated all of his resources, financial and personal, travelled around the globe, authored over twenty books, and established papermills and presses in New York and Ohio. The organization Friends of Dard Hunter and Cathleen Baker’s biography pay tribute to his life and work.
