Food Prices / Eat the Rich
The dating on this button is inconclusive but its message is probably related to the rapid upsurge in food prices during the 1980’s. From 1985 to 1990, food prices increased an average of 25%, adjusted for inflation. Income inequality increased significantly throughout the decade as well. These changes disproportionately affected low income households, which the button aims to highlight in an inflammatory way. This button speaks to one of the mechanisms of the propaganda of marginalized groups: Creating solidarity by exhibiting bold resistance.
