Schools Spread Sexism
This button was probably distributed at the National Women’s Conference in Houston, TX, in 1978. Its purpose was to highlight how strict gender roles were perpetuated in the realm of formal education. In an op-ed inspired by the button’s catch phrase, biology teacher Jack Carter highlighted gender-centric ways in which students around the nation were being taught at the time. The issues that he discussed included a lack of representation of women as science teachers and as administrators, as well as the notion that a woman’s role in college is to land a husband.
