Neuromancer is a landmark cyberpunk novel about a hacker hired for a dangerous job by a powerful artificial intelligence. It defined the cyberpunk genre, fusing noir style with a high-tech dystopian future. For the novel, Gibson coined and popularized the term “cyberspace,” a virtual realm where data becomes a physical landscape. Independent artificial intelligences have their own agendas, including the pursuit of autonomy and the merging of human and machine. The novel won the Hugo, Nebula and Philip K. Dick awards, the only novel to win all three in the same year.
