In 1991, the medical center began implementing an Integrated Advanced Information Management System (IAIMS), a 7.5-year effort to create an information network throughout VUMC, anticipating future informatics, research, and educational needs. The new fiber optic data network was finished in 1992, and the Eskind Biomedical Library, which opened in 1994, was designed as the information and informatics hub of the system.
